MONTCLAIR, NJ -- Diapers.com recorded a 340% increase in online sales in 2006; this increase ranked second highest among all United States companies according to the June issue of Internet Retailer magazine. The magazine also named Diapers.com the fastest growing pure-play Internet retailer in the country. 1-800-Diapers Inc., parent company of Diapers.com, grew its sales from $2.5 million in 2005 to $11 million in 2006. The company sells the largest selection of name brand diapers, wipes and formula on the Internet, offering customers low prices and the convenience of fast, free shipping.
“Diapers.com is a perfect example of the power of the Internet in niche retailing,” said Kurt Peters, editor-in-chief of Internet Retailer. “340% growth in one year is a good indication that the company identified its target market, then did what it needed to do to attract customers and entice them to buy.”
1-800-Diapers was founded in 2005 by two entrepreneurial dads, Marc Lore and Vinit Bharara. The website initially offered only name brand diapers, later expanding to wipes, formula and a complete line of baby necessities, including soap, shampoo, creams, detergent, pacifiers, bottles and cups. Today, Diapers.com works with all the major suppliers and ships from two warehouses on both coasts.
“In many ways, it feels like we’re just getting started. In fact, my partner and I started working at Diapers.com full time only recently,” said Marc Lore, co-founder and CEO of 1-800-Diapers Inc. “We are absolutely thrilled with our success so far. Looking ahead, we’re focused on building a first-class management team and executing on our vision to create the best one-stop online destination for baby goods. For now, I would project a near tripling of sales in 2007.”
As dads themselves, company founders Marc Lore and Vinit Bharara understand diapers all too well. Tired of the ‘diaper runaround’ ? midnight store runs for diapers, frustrated searches for the right diaper size, wasted time waiting in store lines and traffic and lugging big diaper boxes with their little ones tugging at them ? they created 1-800-Diapers.com (now Diapers.com). Their goal: To offer the widest selection of baby necessities anywhere, the lowest online prices, the convenience of fast, free shipping and the best customer service around. Their bigger mission: To play a small part in making things a little easier and less expensive for new parents and caregivers often faced with an overwhelming barrage of new duties and responsibilities.
